天妃海神,或以为太虚之中,惟天为大,地次之,故天称皇,地称后。海次于地,故称妃,或曰非也。《易》:兑为泽。泽通于天,故曰天泽。以海为大,故曰天池。而兑为少女,故曰妃。艮之男为地公侯,故兑之女为天妃,然今南粤人皆以天妃为林姓云。

天妃是海神。有人认为在广阔的宇宙中,天最大,地其次,所以天被称为“皇”,地被称为“后”。海的地位次于地,所以(主管海的神)被称为“妃”。也有人说不是这样的。《易经》中说:兑卦象征泽(沼泽、湖泊)。泽与天相通,所以称为“天泽”。因为海非常广阔,所以也叫“天池”。而兑卦又象征少女,所以(海神)被称为“妃”。(与此对应)艮卦的阳性象征“地公侯”,所以兑卦的阴性就象征“天妃”。不过,现在的广东人都说天妃姓林。

Tianfei is the Sea Goddess. Some believe that within the vast cosmos, Heaven is the greatest, followed by Earth, thus Heaven is called "Huang" (Emperor) and Earth is called "Hou" (Empress). The sea ranks below the Earth, hence (the deity governing the sea) is called "Fei" (Consort). Others disagree. The I Ching (Book of Changes) states: the Dui trigram symbolizes Marsh/Lake (Ze). Marsh connects with Heaven, thus it's called "Tianze" (Heavenly Marsh). Because the sea is vast, it is also called "Tianchi" (Heavenly Pool). And the Dui trigram also symbolizes the youngest daughter, hence (the Sea Goddess) is called "Fei". (Correspondingly) the male aspect of the Gen trigram symbolizes the "Dukes and Marquises of Earth", therefore the female aspect of the Dui trigram symbolizes "Tianfei" (Heavenly Consort). However, the people of Southern Yue (Guangdong) today all say that Tianfei's surname is Lin.
