杨文懿公临终,于先墓衣冠北拜辞皇帝。或进曰:“医诸。”曰:“医者医病也,吾其病乎?”曰:“祷诸。”曰:“祷者有所愿也,吾所祷非吾所愿。”曰:“若是将何以为归。”曰:“亲在安归。”徐起徘徊四顾,若远行状,乃敛手足端坐而逝。公为学直窥性宗,而践履真至,故死生之际脱然。

When Duke Yang Wenyi (usually referring to Yang Rong, a Ming Dynasty minister posthumously named Wenyi) was nearing his end, he went to his ancestral tomb. Dressed in official robes, he bowed towards the north (the direction of the capital) to bid farewell to the Emperor. Someone suggested, "Shall we call a doctor?" He replied, "Doctors treat illnesses. Am I ill?" (implying death is natural, not an illness). Someone else suggested, "Shall we pray?" He replied, "Prayer is for fulfilling wishes. What I might pray for (like prolonging life) is not what I truly desire." The person then asked, "If so, where will you consider your final destination?"
