  有林氏妇者,新会塘下村林子昭之女也。适邻村某,寇至,妇与其稚弟在楼中,楼高六七丈,甚坚,寇攻楼未下,欲焚楼。女曰:“姊弟俱死,则父嗣绝矣。”负其弟于背,从楼上覆身坠地,头面迸裂而死。卒存其弟。过者称其楼曰“孝烈楼”。予为之铭曰:“妇一坠楼,节孝俱至。一完妇身,一全父嗣。负弟于飞,贤姊有翅。免孤毁伤,杵臼不易。背有鬼神,矢石皆避。前有梁媛,后有林氏。以坠楼传,仁义之事。”

有一位林氏女子,是新会县塘下村林子昭的女儿。她嫁给了邻村某人。有一次强盗来了,林氏和她年幼的弟弟正在一座楼里。这座楼有六七丈高,非常坚固。强盗攻打不下,就想放火烧楼。林氏说:“如果我们姐弟俩都死了,那么我父亲的后代就断绝了。”于是她把弟弟背在背上,从楼顶上头朝下跳了下来,(自己)头脸破裂而死,最终保全了弟弟的性命。路过的人称那座楼为“孝烈楼”。我(屈大均)为她作了一篇铭文说:“这位女子一跳楼,就同时成就了节操与孝行。一方面保全了作为妇人的贞节(免于受辱),另一方面保全了父亲的子嗣。背着弟弟如同飞翔,贤惠的姐姐像长了翅膀。使得孤弟免遭伤害,(其情谊)如同杵臼之交般坚定不移。她的背后仿佛有鬼神护佑,(弟弟落下时)箭石都避开了。前有(贤德的)梁媛,后有这位林氏。(她的事迹)因坠楼而流传,是仁义的典范。”

There was a woman of the Lin family, the daughter of Lin Zizhao from Tangxia Village in Xinhui County. She was married to someone from a neighboring village. Once, bandits arrived. The Lin woman and her young brother were in a tower. The tower was sixty to seventy feet high and very sturdy. The bandits could not breach it and planned to burn it down. The woman said, "If both my brother and I die, my father's lineage will end." So, she carried her brother on her back and jumped headfirst from the top of the tower. She died from severe head and facial injuries, but ultimately saved her brother's life. Passersby called the tower the "Filial and Heroic Tower" (Xiaolie Lou). I (Qu Dajun) wrote an inscription for her, saying: "With one leap from the tower, the woman achieved both chastity and filial piety. One aspect completed her duty as a virtuous woman (avoiding dishonor), the other preserved her father's lineage. Carrying her brother as if flying, the virtuous sister seemed to have wings. Saving the orphan from harm, (their bond was) as steadfast as that between mortar and pestle. It seemed spirits protected her back, (so the brother) avoided arrows and stones (upon landing). Before her, there was (the virtuous) Liang Yuan; after her, there is Lady Lin. Her story, passed down through the act of falling from the tower, is an exemplar of benevolence and righteousness."
