彭烈女墓,在广州大北门外百余武。烈女往为某家婢,色情婉美,其主已许字傔某矣。一夕欲娆之,坚拒不可,主乃逐傔以绝其意。傔临行有言弗逊,主怒挞之数百,肩背流血。烈女遂自缪,死前谓侪曰:“某傔受大杖,凡以我也。我食主与母十余年矣,顾义有所不可。”言短而深,主懊悔无极,葬之郭外。番禺令冯蕖表其墓,铭曰:“夫为人奴,侬乃婢子。雠主不能,侬则当死。”

The Tomb of the Chaste Maiden Peng is located over a hundred paces outside the Great North Gate of Guangzhou. This virtuous maiden was formerly a maidservant in a certain household. Her appearance and demeanor were gentle and beautiful, and her master had already betrothed her to a male servant (傔). One evening, the master attempted to force himself upon her, but she resolutely refused. Consequently, the master expelled the male servant to extinguish her hopes (or eliminate the reason for her refusal). As the male servant was leaving, he spoke disrespectfully. The master became enraged and flogged him several hundred times, causing his shoulders and back to bleed profusely. The chaste maiden then hanged herself. Before dying, she said to her companions: "That male servant suffered a severe beating, all because of me. I have eaten the food provided by the master and his mother for over ten years; considering righteousness (义), there are things I cannot do (implying she couldn't bear the guilt for the servant's suffering, live with the dishonor, or perhaps defy her master)." Her words were brief yet profound. The master was filled with immense remorse and buried her outside the city walls. The magistrate of Panyu County, Feng Qu, erected a marker for her tomb with the inscription: "He was a male servant, and I (侬) am but a maidservant. We cannot take revenge on the master; therefore, I must die."
