海忠介为教官,御史诣学,公不拜,曰:“若至台院,当以属官礼见。此堂乃师长教士之地,体不应绌。”两训导夹公长跪,公立当中,时谓笔床学士。盖教官者,能尊其身而后能尊先圣,不能尊其身,则何以代先圣而行其教,其辱先圣莫大焉。御史如贤,当以忠介之言请于朝,定为仪注。

海瑞(谥号忠介)担任教官时,有御史到学校视察,海瑞没有向他下拜。海瑞说:“如果我到您的官署(御史台)拜访,自当按照下属官员的礼节参见。但这里是师长教导学子的地方,按体制我不应屈身行拜礼。”(当时)两位训导(教官的副手)在两旁夹着海瑞长跪不起,海瑞则站立在中间。当时人们称他为“笔床学士”。这是因为,作为教官,必须能尊重自身的职责身份,然后才能尊敬古代的圣贤。如果不能尊重自身的职责身份,又怎么能代表古代圣贤来施行教化呢?那对古代圣贤的侮辱就太大了。那位御史如果贤明,就应当将海瑞的这番话上奏朝廷,请求将此定为正式的礼仪规范。

When Hai Rui (posthumously known as Zhongjie, "Loyal and Upright") served as an education official, an Imperial Censor visited the school. Hai Rui did not bow to him. Hai Rui stated, "If I were to visit your office (the Censorate), I would naturally greet you with the etiquette appropriate for a subordinate official. However, this hall is a place where teachers instruct students; according to protocol, I should not humble myself by bowing." The two Assistant Instructors knelt for a long time flanking Hai Rui, while Hai Rui himself stood in the middle. At the time, people called him the "Brush-Rest Scholar." This is because an education official must first respect his own position and responsibilities before he can truly respect the ancient sages. If he cannot respect his own position, how can he act on behalf of the ancient sages to implement their teachings? That would be the greatest insult to the ancient sages. If that Censor had been wise, he should have reported Hai Rui's words to the imperial court and requested that this be established as official protocol.
