甘泉讲学天关,有简翁者,年百有三岁。就而问学,将执弟子之礼,甘泉弗受也。延翁忠爱堂上南向坐,己东向坐以宾之,谓是翁容貌凝然,所养纯一,赤子之心已复,吾当师而事之。时甘泉年八十有五,观者谓其以三达之尊,而谦让不遑,致礼布衣一老,诚为有道者之风云。时有黎养真瑞鸾者,年八十二,黄慎斋民淮年八十一,吴藤川纯年八十,皆游甘泉门下,甘泉称为三皓。有歌云:"养真慎斋与藤川,三皓同时及我门。"而袁教授邮者,年七十余,与慎斋同注甘泉《心性图》书。一堂之上,师弟子皆庞眉鹤发,太古衣冠。好事者因与简翁合绘为图,称曰师弟六皓。其后甘泉年九十五,复开龙潭书院,时东莞有钟景星叔辉者,年七十有二,增城有张春冈潮者,年七十有三。侍之开讲,每展书发挥所得,声响不减少年,皆异人也。

湛甘泉先生在天关讲学时,有一位叫简翁的老者,年纪高达一百零三岁。他前来向甘泉先生请教、学习,想要行拜师之礼。甘泉先生没有接受,而是邀请简翁在忠爱堂上朝南的主位坐下,自己则朝东坐在宾客的位置上,以此待客之礼尊敬他。甘泉先生说这位老翁容貌沉静,内涵修养纯粹专一,已经恢复了婴儿般纯洁的心境(赤子之心),我应当把他当作老师来侍奉。当时甘泉先生已经八十五岁了。观看的人都说他以(德、位、年)三者兼备的崇高地位,却仍然谦虚退让,对一位平民老者如此恭敬有礼,实在是得道之人的风范啊!当时还有黎养真(名瑞鸾),年纪八十二岁;黄慎斋(名民淮),年纪八十一岁;吴藤川(名纯),年纪八十岁,都在甘泉先生门下学习,甘泉先生称他们为“三皓”(三位白发长者)。曾有歌谣唱道:“养真、慎斋与藤川,三位皓首同时来到我门下。”另外还有一位袁教授(名邮),年纪七十多岁,与黄慎斋一起注释甘泉先生的《心性图》这本书。在同一个学堂里,老师和弟子们都是白眉毛、白头发(形容年老),穿着古朴的衣冠。喜欢记载这些事的人于是将简翁和甘泉先生及其他几位老者(指三皓及袁教授邮,凑成六人)一起画成图像,称之为“师弟六皓图”。后来甘泉先生九十五岁时,又开设了龙潭书院。当时东莞有位钟景星(字叔辉),年纪七十二岁;增城有位张春冈(名潮),年纪七十三岁。他们侍奉在甘泉先生身边听讲,(甘泉先生)每次展开书本阐发心得时,声音洪亮不减当年,(这些高龄学者)都是非同寻常的人啊。

When Master Zhan Ganquan lectured at Tianguan, there was an elder named Jian Weng, who was 103 years old. He came to inquire and learn from Master Ganquan, intending to perform the rites of a disciple. Master Ganquan did not accept this; instead, he invited Jian Weng to sit in the seat of honor facing south in the Zhong'ai Hall (Hall of Loyalty and Love), while he himself sat facing east in the guest's position, treating him with the courtesy due to a guest. Master Ganquan remarked that this elder had a serene countenance and pure, focused inner cultivation, having recovered the heart of a newborn (Chizi Zhi Xin), and stated, "I should regard him as a teacher and serve him." At that time, Master Ganquan himself was 85 years old. Observers commented that despite his venerable status—possessing virtue, position, and age (San Da Zhi Zun)—he remained exceedingly humble, showing such deference to a commoner elder ("Buyi Yi Lao"), truly embodying the conduct of one who has attained the Dao. At that time, there were also Li Yangzhen (Rui Luan), aged 82; Huang Shenzhai (Min Huai), aged 81; and Wu Tengchuan (Chun), aged 80, all studying under Master Ganquan. Master Ganquan referred to them as the "Three Hoary Figures" (San Hao). A verse went: "Yangzhen, Shenzhai, and Tengchuan, three white-haired elders arrive at my door together." Furthermore, there was Professor Yuan (You), over 70 years old, who collaborated with Huang Shenzhai in annotating Master Ganquan's book, Diagram of Mind and Nature (Xinxing Tu). Within the same hall, both the teacher and disciples had bushy white eyebrows and crane-white hair (Pang Mei He Fa, describing advanced age), wearing simple, ancient-style attire. An enthusiast consequently commissioned a painting depicting Jian Weng together with Master Ganquan and the other elders (likely the "Three Hoary Figures" and Professor Yuan, making six in total), calling it the "Painting of the Six Hoary Figures: Teacher and Disciples" (Shidi Liu Hao). Later, when Master Ganquan was 95, he reopened the Longtan Academy. At that time, Zhong Jingxing (Shuhui) from Dongguan, aged 72, and Zhang Chungang (Chao) from Zengcheng, aged 73, attended his lectures. Whenever Master Ganquan unfolded a book and expounded on his insights, his voice remained as resonant as in his youth. All these elderly scholars were extraordinary individuals.
